Duncan served in the Royal Engineers from 1978 to 1990 serving with 36 Engineer Regiment, based at Invicta Barracks, Maidstone, Kent, 35 Engineer Regiment, based at Gordon Barracks, Hameln, West Germany, 33 Independent Field Squadron, based at Massereene Barracks, Antrim, Northern Ireland and 38 Engineer Regiment based at Claro Barracks, Ripon, North Yorkshire.
Duncan served on tours to Kenya, Cyprus, Denmark, Norway, Northern Ireland, Canada and Belize.
After leaving the army Duncan went into the building trade and worked at this for several years with his last job being to run a building site in the Falkland Islands.
Duncan had been heavily involved in fundraising for VIA in Scotland and in 2013 took part on the Union Flag Walk from Cape Wrath to John O’Groats then down the east coast of the UK finishing in Dover.
On his return from the Falklands, Duncan became a full time member of the VIA TEAM and trained as an Expedition Leader and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills and joint led VIA’s 4,000 mile Walk 4 PTSD around the coastline of Britain alongside Billy MacLeod.
Duncan has since been involved in all projects run by Veterans In Action as well as taking part on three overland expeditions using his skills as an expedition leader and in bush craft. Duncan is an integral part of how expeditions work doing much of the unseen work behind the scenes within the expedition.
Duncan works from the VIA ALIVE Centre and is involved in all aspects of the running and development of VIA.
