15th July 2017 to 06th August 2017
The VIA Adventure Walk is our main outdoor event of the year and part of our ALIVE Program where we take veterans suffering from PTSD or other mental health problems on a long distance walk. The walk this year will be the stunning South West Coast Path.
The South West Coast Path is England’s longest way-marked long-distance footpath and a National Trail. It stretches for 630 miles (1,014 km), running from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to Poole Harbour in Dorset. Since it rises and falls with every river mouth, it is also one of the most challenging trails. The total height climbed has been calculated to be 114,931 ft (35,031 m), almost four times the height of Mount Everest.
VIA long distance walks are inclusive so that all different fitness levels can take part. Each day of this walk is broken down into 4 stages covering a distance of between 10 to 15 miles on each stage. Group walks are fantastic although on VIA long distance walks we believe that those suffering benefit more by walking in twos or threes to encourage veterans to communicate with each other. Each day walkers change so that veterans walk with the whole group throughout the walk building relationships and trust with everyone.
Walkers are supported throughout by support vehicles who drop off each stage at their start points and pick them up from their finish points. VIA long distance walks are not speed marches they are designed to be enjoyed by participants of all different fitness levels and who are encouraged to support each other through each day. There is no heavy packs to be carried as all these are carried by support vehicles or kept at camp site locations.
The VIA Team will add some form of adventure training into the walk to add more adventure to this already fantastic challenge.
