FALKLANDS WAR 40 th ANNIVERSARY VIRTUAL CHALLENGE FALKLANDS 40 CHALLENGE The Falklands War began on 2 April 1982, when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, followed by the invasion of South Georgia the next day. On 5 April, the British government dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands. The war lasted 74 days and ended with an Argentine surrender on 14 June, returning the islands to British control. In total, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities. The FALKLANDS 40 CHALLENGE is commemorating the anniversary of this short but brutal war and as a virtual challenge can be undertaken anywhere and by any means. The aim of the challenge is for each person taking part to complete a distance of 40 miles and raising a minimum of £40 in sponsorship to commemorate the 40 th anniversary. Each person completing the challenge will receive a FALKLANDS 40 th Challenge coin. Those that reach a fundraising target of £100 will receive a FALKLANDS 40th Challenge coin and bespoke Challenge rugby shirt.
